Mindfulness Therapy
You may have heard about the practice of mindfulness in achieving a sense of peace within oneself. Mindfulness is rooted in Buddhist theory and is the idea of creating “space” within for self-soothing. When difficult emotions arise that we struggle to escape from or attempt to stop; the practice of mindfulness is to be present and stop running away. Facing our feelings and fears helps us create a relationship with ourselves that is nurturing and safe.
We make a decision to step back if an emotion is too strong, painful or distressing rather than reacting when emotionally heightened. This technique takes practice and time to develop but very rewarding. It helps us tap into the part of ourselves where we feel content and okay.
As your therapist, we can explore this further and how to introduce these concepts. Everyone can develop self-care habits to help manage what feels unmanageable in the moment. Taking a step back can be key in changing self-destructive patterns of behavior. There is still much to be learned about the mind. The more we understand how our mind works then we begin to embrace how strong and fragile we are as human beings.
